Buddha's Warrior Attendant Pounds Mortar 金剛搗碓

Jīn gāng dǎo duì

How to do it

Signature Chen movement: hands circle and scoop up; the right knee and right fist lift together, then the foot stamps and the fist drops into the left palm at the dantian – grounding the energy like a pestle in a mortar.

Step by step

  1. Circle both hands up and to the left, then forward
  2. Step the right foot up next to the left, hands scooping up in front
  3. Lift the right knee and right fist together to chest height
  4. Stamp the right foot down as the fist drops into the left palm at the navel

Breathing

Inhale on the rise; exhale on the drop.

Health focus

Balance, leg power, grounding; for health practice skip the stamp.

Common mistakes

  • Stamping heavily on a hard floor (risk to joints)
  • Leaning back as the knee lifts

Martial meaning

Uppercut and knee lift followed by a downward strike.

How it varies between styles
